Design and Printing

How do I ensure good quality when uploading my own pictures?
In order to get the best results, your picture or graphic should correspond to the following requirements:

• Valid file formats are .png, .jpg, .bmp or .tif
• Minimum resolution of 200 dpi, prefereably 300 dpi
• Maximum file size is 10MB

The size and resolution of your graphic can be checked and modified in most photograph editing software, such as Microsoft Office Picture Manager or Photoshop.

How big should my photo or graphic be?
The size of the picture you would like to upload depends on the size of the garment or product you would like to customise. A large, good quality print on an XL t-shirt is approximately 30x35 cm; the picture for a print of this size should therefore have a size of 300 dpi and approximately 3543x4134 pixels.
Alternatively, for a good quality company logo of 10x5 cm, we recommend a resolution of 300 dpi and approximately 1181x591 pixels.
If you are unsure, the Shirtinator stars (see below) which appear when you upload a picture will tell you if the resolution is good enough.

What do the stars which have appeared next to my uploaded picture mean?
The stars which appear next to your uploaded picture will help you determine the best quality for your print. The stars are based on the resolution of your picture, also known as its dpi.

These stars show the quality of the uploaded image.
4 Sterne
Excellent image quality
3 Sterne
Good image quality
2 Sterne
Sufficient image quality
1 Stern
Inadequate image quality. We recommend using a design with a better image quality.
0 Stern
Insufficent image quality. We suggest you do not use the uploaded file.

After you have uploaded your picture and placed it on your selected garment, the image will be shown in your selected size.

By changing a picture's size, you can change the picture's quality. For example, if you substantially increase the size of the picture, you may reduce its quality if the resolution is not high enough; this would lead to a pixelated and unclear print. In contrast, a reduction in the size of the picture will improve the resolution and result in a better print quality.

Can a picture without a background be printed?
It depends on the printing method available for your chosen garment. For garments which are not currently offered with direct digital printing, the background cannot be removed and a background will remain visible.

For products which are offered with direct digital printing and you would like a transparent background, please ensure that you have edited the file so that the appropriate areas are transparent, and upload the file as a .png.

How can I save a .png file with a transparent background?
Pictures without a background can be printed if your product is available with Direct Printing. For this we need a picture saved as a .png file in which the background has been removed so that it is transparent. The picture must therefore be edited in a graphics program such as Photoshop or Microsoft office so that the background is erased before you upload it; simply saving the file as a .png is not enough.

What is flex printing?

Flex printing offers some of the finest results in printing. It offers a smooth and slightly shiny surface, and is ideal for fonts and logos, and for blocks of colours. There is a maximum of three colours per graphic.

How it's done:
The printing is done using a thin film from which the print is cut out. The film is then fused onto the garment using high temperature and high pressure.

Advantages:

  • Strong depth of colour
  • Bright colour
  • Durable

Disadvantages:

  • No colour gradients / blending possible

Please note:

  • Flex print is only possible for Shirtinator's own motifs
  • Particularly large motifs can crease or wrinkle after a few washes
  • Iron inside-out to preserve the motif

What is flock printing?
Flock printing offers a high quality and durable print result. It results in a tactile finish that feels slightly like velvet which is slightly raised from the garment. There is a maximum of three colours per motif.

How it's done:

The printing is done using a thin film from which the print is cut out. The film is then fused onto the garment using high temperature and high pressure.

Advantages:

  • Strong depth of colour
  • Bright colours
  • Durable

Disadvantages:

  • No colour gradients / blending is possible

Please note:

  • Flock printing is available only with Shirtinator's motifs
  • Particularly large designs are best suited to products made of thick or heavy fabric such as hoodies. Since the flock print is quite thick and not very flexible, it is not so comfortable to wear on thin garments such as t-shirts.

What is sublimation printing?
Sublimation is the use of heat and pressure to convert ink from a solid to gaseous state, comprising a polymetric coating. This enables the colours to be fully absorbed by the product, creating a long-lasting, durable print. Sublimation is particularly good for light-weight textiles such as t-shirts, but also for a variety of products such as mugs and sunshades, and it offers the full range of colours and colour gradients. It can however only be used with products that contain polyester.

How it's done:
The design is first prepared with a sublimation printer using special ink and coated paper. It is then transferred to the product using heat and pressure, creating a polymetric coating.

Advantages:

  • Excellent sharpness
  • Brillant colours
  • All images and colour gradients possible
  • Durable

Please note:
Sublimation printing can only be carried out with products containing polyester, and can therefore be used only with the following garments:

  • Basic Sport T-Shirt Men
  • Micro Sport T-Shirt Men
  • Basic Sport T-Shirt Women
  • Micro Sport T-Shirt Women

What is direct printing?
Direct printing is ideal for photos and colourful motifs with many colours and colour gradients. It is perfect for complex, full-colour images such as customer designs, photos and company logos, and can be printed on both white and coloured graphics.

How it's done:
With direct printing, special ink is sprayed directly onto the product and the colours blend with the product during the drying process. Since direct printing does not use a film to create the image, it creates a soft and comfortable product to wear. Additionally, transparent backgrounds are possible, and direct printing will not leave a frame around the design. Since all colours are possible, it is suitable for motifs with more than three colours and colour gradients.

Advantages:

  • All pictures possible
  • All colours possible
  • Very durable

Please note:
This type of printing is available only for textiles. Newly printed products can feel a bit sticky or tacky, but this disappears after a couple of washes.

We use direct printing with most of the motifs uploaded by our customers. Due to the properties of different textiles, however, we can currently use it on some garments only.

We are constantly working to expand our product portfolio.

Can you print exact colour tones, such as Pantone Colours?
We cannot guarantee exact colour shades due to the technical challenges involved in the production process.

Should I create my image in CMYK or RGB colours?
Direct digital printing is done in CMYK. Since the graphics need to be edited before printing, we recommend RGB, but both are possible.

How should I wash a Shirtinator product?
In order to get the best out of your garment, we kindly ask you to care for it as follows:

  • Wash before use
  • Wash at 30° C
  • Do not use liquid detergents
  • Do not bleach
  • Do not tumble dry
  • Do not dry clean
  • Do not iron on a high heat
  • Do not use fabric softener
  • Wash inside out

Please note:
Due to the processes used for direct printing, the product may have a slight smell or have small patches of brighter colour on the print. Both the patches and the smell will however disappear after washing.
